Essentially, it is a drug that temporarily blocks muscular nerve signals. Injections of small amounts into specific facial muscles block the muscles’ impulses. This weakens the muscle and diminishes unwanted lines.
The treatment only takes about ten minutes to perform and requires a few small injections to the targeted area. No anesthesia is required but topical numbing can be used if requested.
Typically, Botox takes effect in 5-7 days. The softening and elimination of the lines will typically last 3-4 months. The effect will gradually fade as the muscle action returns.
Side effects are generally minimal, temporary, and typically relate to the local injection site. Soreness or mild bruising are not common but may occur around the injection site. A temporary headache is not uncommon after injections in forehead region. All possible side effects are mild, reversible, self-limiting and ultimately temporary if, in the rare instance, they occurred.
