This is a new laser system which treats vascular and benign pigmented skin conditions. Many skin conditions manifest in the form of broken blood vessels in the skin, as is the case with rosacea, where the facial blood vessels dilate excessively causing redness and flushing. Excel V treats vascular conditions by administering a unique high power green laser that is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the vessels will no longer be visible.
After an initial consultation, our doctors will determine if treatment with the Excel V would be appropriate. Excel V is well tolerated; injections and topical anesthesia are not required for this procedure. The procedure will take 15-30 minutes. Depending on the condition the Excel V handpiece is passed over the affected area of the skin until the abnormal vessels diminish. To minimize discomfort and protect the patient’s skin, the Excel V uses a cooling mechanism.
Bruising, redness and swelling are common after the treatment and will resolve after a few days. It is vital that you use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen of SPF30 or higher and avoid excessive sun exposure. For leg vein treatments compression stockings are optional and high impact exercise must be avoided for 3-5 days. Our staff will give you further post care instructions after your treatment.
The number of treatments depends on various parameters, including the size, thickness and color of the vascular lesion. Superficial vascular lesions are usually easiest to treat: some patients might see significant improvement after just one treatment. Individual results vary and the number of treatments needed will be determined with your physician.
Most patients describe it as a mild stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the handpiece. Many patients state that the Excel V is more comfortable than sclerotherapy or IPL.
Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and swelling of the skin. Some patients may experience bruising and swelling of the skin, and in rare instances, blistering may occur. Our staff will discuss all side effects and post care with you at your appointment.
Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months.
