Superficial leg veins can be treated with sclerotherapy or lasers. At Ark-La-Tex Dermatology we offer both options. Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat spider veins on the legs. Using a syringe with a tiny needle, your doctor injects a small amount of a hypertonic saline solution directly into the spider veins causing injury inside the unwanted vessels. Following the injections, you will wear compression stockings to compress the treated veins. The blood becomes trapped in the injected veins. The body then gradually absorbs the trapped blood, and the vein disappears over a three to four week period. Often two to three treatment sessions are required to achieve a 90% or better clearing of the spider veins. The treatments, although mildly uncomfortable, are very safe and effective.
To treat spider veins with a laser we use the Excel V. Pulses of light energy are delivered to the targeted vessel. This causes the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel, which is later reabsorbed by the body.
