One of the easiest ways to slow the aging process, and to avoid the risk of skin cancer, is to protect yourself from the sun. However, that “right off the beach” color is so tempting. So to avoid the damaging UVA/ UVB rays from the sun or from a tanning bed, we have the safe solution. Norvell sunless solutions nourish the skin while also providing beautiful tanning results. This is an airbrush technique and not a booth spray. Our aestheticians will physically spray you.
The active ingredient, DHA or dihydroxyacetone, causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids on the outer most layer of the skin. This reaction results in the skin changing into a beautiful and natural looking color. The reaction usually occurs in 2-4 hours and continues up to 16 hours. The best results will occur if you can wait to shower until the following day. We recommend you wait at least 24 hours and only rinse with water because soap can interfere with the chemical process. The cosmetic bronzer that you see right after your session will wash off after your first shower and then you will see your DHA bronze tan underneath.
Each tan should last approximately 4-7 days, however the longevity of the spray tan does vary with each individual. Not everyone’s daily activities are the same and excessive exercise or sweating will decrease the life of the tan. Swimming in chlorinated or salt water will fade results. Shaving is a form of exfoliation so it will affect the life of the tan. A professional applied tan will last longer than one applied at home. It is very important to exfoliate prior to your session and to moisturize daily after your session.
For the best results shower and exfoliate/shave the day before your session. Do not wear any lotion, perfume, deodorant or makeup to your appointment.
Most of our patients prefer to wear an old bathing suit or underwear to minimize tan lines. We do have disposable underwear if you prefer. Men, you will need to bring swim trunks, boxers/briefs or loose shorts. After your session we recommend loose fitting clothing and preferably dark in color. The solution does not stain and will wash out. The Norvell solution will dry within a few minutes, so that you can redress.
Because this is a chemical reaction with the skin it cannot be removed, and must naturally fade with the shedding of the skin. Exfoliating can speed up the process but you do not want to over-scrub or over exfoliate. This could lead to skin irritation. It will take approximately 1-2 weeks for the “tan” to disappear.
The active ingredient, DHA has been used in cosmetic products for 30 years and is approved by the FDA. It is considered safe for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin.
