IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Ark-La-Tex Dermatology offers the Palomar Starlux 500 as one option to treat sun spots or vessels. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) uses gentle pulses of intense, optimized light to treat undesirable pigment and vessels.

How does Palomar pulsed light, for photorejuvenation, work?

The Palomar System has specialized hand pieces which filter light to target blood vessels and pigmented lesions. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sunspot removal and vessel clearance.

The photorejuvenation handpiece emits pulses of light into the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in visible vessels, which typically fade from view within two weeks.

What body areas can I get treated?

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Legs

What are the photorejuvenation treatments like?

As the handpiece is moved over your skin, each pulse will emit a beam of light. You will be able to see it, hear a tone, and feel a mild sensation on your skin as the handpiece is being pulsed.

What should I expect after the photorejuvenation treatment?

  • Immediately after the treatment you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possible accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with a gel pack.
  • Sunspot/Sun Damage: The sun spots will darken after treatment and be naturally shed from the skin within 1-2 weeks.
  • Rosacea: Skin tone will typically benefit from less pronounced redness within a week after treatments.

How many treatments are necessary?

Typically, four to six treatments scheduled every two to three weeks will provide the desired result. More treatments may be needed, depending upon the severity of the skin damage.
